Gone are the days of bringing rolls of film to the local shop to get them developed, and those bulky Polaroid cameras now gather dust in the closet.

But Polaroid cameras have recently been coming out of storage. Over the past few years, the company has been busy capitalizing on the recent hype for nostalgic cameras and the instant printing capabilities of its most famous product.

There have been several new instant cameras on the market, including the Fujifilm Instax, Lomography’s Lomo'Instant and, of course, Polaroid’s own line of Originals. With instant film so popular, there are now once again hundreds of these small, square-shaped photographs laying around — and your favorites should be preserved and displayed the right way.

How Instant Film Works

Unlike traditional photography, instant film has all it needs inside the camera itself. This is also why the film is more expensive than standard film — you are skipping the need for additional photographic paper, chemicals and a darkroom or a professional printer.

An instant photograph is produced when an image is projected onto a film substrate that already contains the chemicals required to develop the photograph; it’s like a mini darkroom. There are a number of different chemicals used depending on the manufacturer and the type of photograph (e.g. color or black and white), but the film generally contains the same three components: a positive sheet, a negative sheet and the chemicals, which are usually enclosed in one of the sheets in a pod. In those early-days Polaroids, they were at the thick end of the final photograph — where most people wrote down what was in the image.

Once the image is taken, the film is passed through rollers that simultaneously break open the pod containing the chemicals and press the sheets together. The chemicals are spread throughout the film, and the image develops in about one minute. Older Polaroids required that the user apply a coating after the film develops, but the book Storing, Handling and Preserving Polaroid Photographs mentions coating the photo with a type of lacquer to minimize oxygen exposure even with “coaterless” film. Since that book hasn’t been updated since 1983, however, it’s best to leave the coating off.

Preserving Instant Photographs

Just like standard photographs and prints, instant film can suffer the same damage as standard film. However, a little more care should be taken when handling the still-developing film — according to Polaroid, the more closely the photographer followed the instructions, the longer the photo will last.

Tip: Shaking the photo does not help a Polaroid develop faster. In fact, it could actually damage the developing photograph!

Before and just after the photograph develops, there are few things you should definitely not do to ensure the longevity of your final images:

Do not stack or handle just-processed film.

Do not press on the chemical pod in the film.

Do not cut or bend photographs.

Do not open film until ready to use.

Do not remove the (often white) border along the photograph. It serves to protect the image from airborne contaminants.

Do not use staples or paperclips on the photograph.

Aside from those specific rules, the standard photography preservation practices apply: keep the photos away from light, heat and moisture; most organizations maintain that Polaroids will fade in as just as much time as conventional photographs. Store the photographs in a cool, dry and dark place, such as in an acid-free photo box in print sleeves in the basement or bedroom (the attic becomes far too hot). Make sure that you do not store traditional photos or paper items such as newspaper or photocopies in direct contact with instant film, as the chemicals can interact and damage the instant photograph.

Displaying Instant Photos: How to Frame a Polaroid

You can frame instant photographs just like you would any other print, taking care to choose the right UV-filter glass or UV-filter acrylic glazing if you plan on keeping the photo around for a while. There are a few ways to do the framing itself, such as float mounting. With this technique, the instant photographs can get a little bit of added whimsy, highlighting the telltale border instead of hiding it.

You could also use the white border of the frame as the “mat board”, and frame right up until those borders for a more intimate framing style. Because Polaroids have that thicker edge at the bottom, you can also mimic the popular bottom-weighted or museum mat board style with just the Polaroid itself. For more emphasis, include a wide-edged single or double mat board, placing the photograph inside.

If you’d rather put your instant photographs on display in a more creative way, such as hung from twine and clips, there are tons of ways to do so. But keep in mind that unlike digital photographs, there is only one copy of that photograph — and no negative to print it again. Once the photograph is damaged or lost, it is gone forever. It can be overwhelming to think about organizing hundreds or even thousands of photos that you’ve left to “take care of later.” Instead of putting it off once again, start with a plan.

If you have multiple boxes of photos to organize, prepare to dedicate at least a week to this task. Our recommended plan will give you a systematic way to organize the photos you have and the ones you will take in the future. The goal is to put a system in place that enables you to find your photos easily and preserve them for future generations.

1. Gather all of your loose photos in one place.

Over the years, it is likely that you have collected photos in several different places. This may be in the attic, basement, junk drawers, cabinets, your purse and any nook and cranny of the house. Gather all the photos and loose negatives you can find in one place, including any photo albums that are in need of attention.

2. Create categories for your photos.

Create categories for your photos: they can be organized by years or decades, holidays, occasions or people. Place the photos into these piles accordingly. If you have recently acquired photos from a relative, you may have to dedicate more time to this task — especially if you intend to organize by people in the photos — as you may not be able to recognize all the photo subjects. Involve a family member to help, and make it a fun family event!

For this first step of categorization, choose four to six general categories. Label and store the photo boxes.

After you have sorted your photos, label each box with its category. Write it on the outside of each photo box and store them in a dry and climate controlled room. Put your photos in albums. (Optional)

After you have properly organized your photos, decide if you would like to have some photos easily accessible in albums. Many people opt to keep photo albums as they are easy to view and share with guests.

6. Digitize your printed photographs. (Optional)

Go a step further in your photograph preservation by saving your images digitally. Digitizing photographs is not only a great way to save them from damage and loss, it makes them easier to share with family and friends. This can be a time-consuming process, but there are many photo scanning services available that can take physical photos and digitize them.

7. Organize your negatives.

Now is the time to address the pile of negatives. The rule of thumb is to keep negatives as flat as possible, preferably using negative storage sheets, which are specially made to keep them flat and protected. For ease of sorting, you can write on the sheets to label them clearly. Place your labeled negatives in a photo storage box to avoid damage.

8. Maintain an organized routine

After you’ve gone through the mammoth task of organizing loose photos, create a habit of staying organized. Label your photos as soon as they are printed, including the date, location, subjects and any other relevant information. Add them to the labeled photo storage boxes or photo album.

Organizing your printed photos and negatives can be time consuming, but it is a worthwhile endeavor. When your photos are labeled clearly and placed neatly in photo albums, you will be more likely to share them with friends and family — and not just on social media. A family gathering in which stories are shared is made much richer when a photo album can be retrieved to illustrate the story. Best of all, when photos are stored safely, your family can enjoy them for years to come.

","
Years of family outings, birthday parties, school events and other photograph-worthy moments can amount to innumerable boxes of printed photographs and negatives. Heat, moisture, and air pollutants are the usual suspects. It can come from the storage area, the housing and framing products in your home, nearby materials, and from the photo itself. Various gases in the air can cause the damage as well. Ozone and nitrogen dioxide may cause yellowing of the phots and bleeding for inkjet prints.

Handling Best Practices

The main issues that occur when handling photos are colorant scratching, scuffing and smearing, and surface cracking. The ease of shooting quality pictures at minimal cost allows many to pursue their curiosity and take more pictures, which leads to improved skills and greater curiosity about what’s possible.

These are some of the great benefits of digital cameras. Digital photo tools offer even more options. With the computerized tools available now for working with digital images, methods of photo restoration are available that were never before possible for the amateur photographer. Learn a few editing techniques and you can restore old family photos or historic photos to a new clearness and clarity.

Start With a Scan

Restoring old photographs starts with creating a digital copy of the printed photo. The scanning step is important because the information that the digital editing tools will use to adjust the picture has to be captured in this step. The better the original scan, the more options you will have later on.

Settings: It’s worth doing some experimentation at the scanning stage to find the best settings for your scanner. You can use modern photos for some of this process if your old prints are fragile and you don’t want to risk damaging them during multiple scans. The software that came with your scanner is probably fine, but other scanning software is also available. VueScan is a good, inexpensive option for scanning in printed photos, while a product called SilverFast is great if you scannable original negatives.

Resolution: To scan your pictures, aim for a DPI (pixels per inch) resolution of at least 400-600 for prints. If you are scanning negatives, consider scanning at a much higher resolution, as much as 2,000-3,000 DPI. This will give you more options for printing larger photos if desired, as well as giving you the most information possible. There’s a tradeoff, though, in the scanned file size and how much grain shows up in the scanned file. Again, some experimentation will help you find the best solution.

Bit Depth: Scan your photos with the highest bit depth possible to gather all available color information. This will help you make more adjustments to your scanned file without making it start to look over-processed. Use a TIFF file format or RAW if your scanner has those options.

Archive the Final Scan

Before you start editing your scanned photo, make a copy of it in a safe place that you won’t make any changes to, and make sure this file is also safely backed up. This way if you make a mistake with your digital adjustments, change your mind or simply want to try some new effects, you can start over from a copy of the original scan. This way you won’t need to repeat the scanning step or try to work with a file that has already been edited.

Common Digital Restoration Techniques

Old photographs tend to suffer from a similar range of problems. If you know how to fix the most common kinds of damage, you can restore many photos to a beautiful, refreshed state.

Fading: Fading in photographs is essentially a loss of contrast. The darkest areas of a photo lighten and the lightest areas darken, until the whole photo loses its clearness and sharpness. The levels tool in your photo editing software can help counter this problem by increasing the contrast range of the photo to restore the dark and light areas of the photo. You may be able to adjust the contrast in a separate layer, which allows for careful fine-tuning of the photograph later on.

Yellowing: Many photos take on a yellow cast as they age. There are a couple of possible solutions. If you have a color dropper tool and a photo with an appropriate clear area of white or light neutral gray that you can pick up with the dropper, you may be able to reduce the color cast all at once by replacing the yellow color with the correct color. Otherwise, you can use manual adjustments with your software’s color balancing tool or try the automatic color balancer if one is available.

Damage: If your photo has localized damage such as spots, stains or tears, use the cloning and healing brush tools. The clone tool duplicates complete image information from one area to another area of the photo, and the healing brush copies only texture from one area to another. These tools need some practice and experimentation in order to learn how to use them most effectively, but when combined they can remove many imperfections.

An Art Form

Digital photo restoration is a form of art itself simply because of the number of subjective decisions that must be made in editing the scanned photo. It’s a creative journey that helps you see the world in new ways, capture meaningful moments, and express yourself visually. Whether you’re interested in landscapes, portraits, travel, or simply taking better everyday photos, learning photography can be one of the most rewarding skills to develop.

If you’re wondering where to begin, don’t worry. You don’t need an expensive camera or years of training to get started. With a few key steps, the right mindset, and some practice, you can quickly start building your skills and confidence behind the lens.

Here’s how to get started in photography, broken down into simple, actionable steps.

1. Start with the Camera You Have

You don’t need to buy a professional DSLR or mirrorless camera on day one. If you own a smartphone, you already have a powerful camera in your pocket. Most smartphones today have impressive image quality and offer plenty of features to begin exploring photography.

When you're ready to upgrade, look into beginner-friendly digital cameras that give you manual control over settings like aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Popular entry-level options include the Canon EOS Rebel series, Nikon D3500, and Sony Alpha a6000.

Focus on learning the fundamentals first. Mastering composition, lighting, and storytelling matters more than the gear you use.

2. Learn the Basics of Exposure

Photography is all about light. To take full control of your images, you need to understand exposure, which is how light reaches your camera sensor. Exposure is controlled by three main settings:

Aperture (f-stop): Controls how much light enters through the lens. It also affects depth of field, or how much of your image is in focus.

Shutter Speed: Controls how long the camera’s sensor is exposed to light. Faster shutter speeds freeze motion, while slower speeds create blur.

ISO: Controls the camera’s sensitivity to light. Higher ISO helps in low-light settings but can introduce grain or noise.

These three settings make up what’s known as the exposure triangle. Understanding how they work together is key to capturing well-exposed, creative images.

3. Study Composition Techniques

Great photography isn’t just about technical skill…it’s also about how you frame and structure your shot. Good composition draws the viewer’s eye and creates visual interest.

Some simple composition tips to get you started:

Rule of Thirds: Divide your frame into thirds both horizontally and vertically. Placing your subject along these lines creates a balanced image.

Leading Lines: Use roads, fences, or shadows to guide the viewer’s eye toward your subject.

Framing: Look for ways to frame your subject within the scene, such as using windows, arches, or foliage.

Negative Space: Leave space around your subject to create minimal, focused images.

Experiment with different techniques and learn to see scenes through a creative lens.

4. Practice as Much as Possible

Like any skill, photography improves with consistent practice. Try to shoot regularly, even if it’s just for a few minutes a day. You can photograph your morning coffee, your neighborhood, or light streaming through a window.

Don’t wait for the perfect subject or travel opportunity: find beauty in the everyday. The more you practice, the more you’ll refine your style, understand your camera, and develop your creative instincts.

You can also give yourself challenges to grow faster. Try taking a photo a day for a month, focusing on one theme like reflections, shadows, or color.

5. Learn to Edit Your Photos

Post-processing is a big part of digital photography. Editing your images can enhance color, fix exposure, and bring out the details you envisioned when you took the shot.

Beginner-friendly editing apps like Snapseed or Lightroom Mobile are great for smartphones. If you're using a DSLR or mirrorless camera, consider using Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop on your computer.

Start with simple edits:adjust brightness, contrast, crop for better composition, and fine-tune colors. As you become more comfortable, you can explore more advanced editing techniques.

Editing is not about fixing mistakes. It's about bringing your creative vision to life.

6. Study Other Photographers

One of the best ways to grow as a photographer is by studying the work of others. Follow photographers you admire on social media, read photography books, and visit galleries or exhibitions when you can.

Ask yourself what draws you to a particular photo. Is it the lighting? The subject? The mood? The composition? Analyzing other people’s work helps you discover your own preferences and style.

You can also join photography communities online or in person. Sharing your work, asking for feedback, and learning from others can be incredibly motivating and educational.

7. Be Patient and Stay Curious

Photography is a journey. You won’t master it overnight, and that’s part of the beauty. Some days you’ll take great shots. Other days, things won’t go as planned. That’s all part of the learning process.

Stay curious. Try new subjects, lighting conditions, and perspectives. Experiment with techniques you’ve never used before. Most importantly, enjoy the process of seeing the world differently through your lens.

Final Thoughts

Getting started in photography doesn’t require fancy gear or formal training. It starts with curiosity, observation, and the desire to create.

As you begin your photography journey, remember to take it step by step. Learn the basics, practice often, study others, and keep shooting. With time and experience, you’ll develop both the technical skills and creative vision to tell stories through your images, and that’s what photography is all about.

So grab your camera, start exploring, and let your creativity guide you.

Written by Mark Rogers

Mark Rogers is the President and Co-Founder of Frame Destination.
